Forklift Truck Training
Operators must undergo training on an industrial-powered lift truck, or forklift to be given forklift operator certification. The training program should be specific to the forklift attachments and type that you will be utilizing on the job site. Training should also reflect the atmosphere in which you will be working. Forklift safety must be a top priority for both the trainer and the operator trainee.
General Qualifications
Anybody utilizing a forklift must undergo both training and certification before assuming operator duties. Basic credentials for utilizing a forklift include being at least 18 years old and the physical capacity to safely control and operate the unit.
Pedestrian Safety
The safety of pedestrians must be a main concern of any forklift operator. Pedestrians in the vicinity of the forklift are at risk of death or injury from getting hit by the equipment or its attachments. Pedestrians always have the right of way, and forklift drivers should honk their horns when working near pedestrians or at intersections or crosswalks.
Weather Conditions
Forklift accidents frequently happen on loading docks. These areas become dangerous if rain leaks in through open dock doors causing a very slippery floor. Wet floor conditions create a hazard and operators need to be aware of possible dangers when working in loading dock areas.
Certification
Certification courses for forklift operators include both classroom instruction and practical training that could be tailored for the particular requirements of each work setting. Training should be undertaken on the forklift type and attachments that will be utilized by the trainee in the workplace.
Accidents
On average, there is approximately 100 deaths attributed to forklift mishaps, while more than one hundred thousand are injured by forklifts. Nearly all of these accidents are preventable with correct operator training and attention to safety.

Telescopic Forklifts
Telescopic forklift units are outfitted with a pronged lift on an arm which extends over the top of the truck providing great height and versatility. The crane, or arm, is called a telescopic boom. The boom enables the operator to raise the cargo to great heights while maintaining a high degree of control. Standard forklifts can not move the cargo away from and towards the forklift cab, whereas a telescopic forklift allows that movement. The telescopic forklift is normally utilized in agriculture and construction. It is better for applications where greater control and lift is needed.
In situations needing high volume carton handling, hydraulic attachments called forklift carton clamp attachments are better. The attachment has arm pads with four way reversible rubber linings which enable the operator to use uniform clamping force when picking up a load. It comes with a backrest that protects the cargo from damage.
A sleep sheet forklift will often utilize a slip sheet attachment for storing systems that don't use pallets. The attachment clamps onto the slip sheet and pulls it onto the forklift forks. This type of system is useful for overseas shipments and intra-corporate deliveries.
A lift platform which is designed to lift staff is referred to as a Man Basket. It attaches to the forklift forks and a strap or chain is utilized to attach the basket to the forklift carriage. The platform has railings to protect the personnel from falling to the ground. Brackets on the platform are used for fastening the worker's safety harness.
